School of Optometry and Vision SciencesThe School of Optometry and Vision Sciences are looking to appoint a number of Clinical Tutors in all aspects of clinical teaching and are able to offer working arrangements to suit you including part and full days.You may remember your time in university, and the impact that your Tutors made on your technique. Perhaps you have wondered whether you would like to impart some of your wisdom and advice to tomorrow's optometrists? Perhaps you would like to contribute to shaping tomorrow's optometrists and prepare them for a life in practice? Under the guidance of mentors within the School, we are offering the opportunity to do just this, in a variety of clinical settings. The role of the Clinical Tutor is varied and includes opportunities to teach in small groups, provide 1:1 support, advance students' clinical competencies, provide occasional informal pastoral support to final year students, and enhance your own knowledge by being part of a team of supervisors; all of whom have areas of expertise and interest of their own. In the role, you become an integral and vital part of the Undergraduate teaching programme in the School and will support and contribute to the School's outstanding record of graduate quality.Applications are invited for supervisors of a variety of undergraduate clinics, including Primary Care, Contact Lenses, Binocular Vision, Low Vision, Dispensing and Special Assessment.IMPORTANT NOTES:We will be making a number of contracted appointments with regular hours, working over 22 weeks of the year. Our contracts will be offered on a 2-year fixed term basis. We are also seeking applications from qualified Optometrists, Contact Lens/ Dispensing Opticians, who would like the opportunity to provide locum cover should ad-hoc staff absences occur. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate level and will contribute to the teaching record of the School through commitment to current teaching activities, leading to the advancement of student clinical competency. The successful candidate will carry out their duties in a developing capacity with the assistance of a mentor.Main Duties
  • Undertake teaching at undergraduate level, preparing and delivering both supervision and informal tutorials in Primary Care and Contact Lens clinics, Binocular Vision, Low Vision, Dispensing and Special Assessment.
  • With guidance, supervise students through providing first line support, pastoral care, student assessments and teaching feedback, including assisting setting and marking of assignments, giving written/oral feedback and collating and providing final assessments of students.
  • Participate actively as a member of a teaching team, providing support to colleagues, contributing to module design, assessment procedures, accreditation of courses and quality control processes; working with colleagues to identify the learning needs of students and define appropriate learning objectives.
  • Supervise students undertaking clinical work, including the provision of individual feedback.
  • Take professional responsibility for patient care, including further investigation and appropriate patient management and referral where necessary.
  • Deliver tutorials and group work, where appropriate; Including preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery
  • Carry out administrative duties where appropriate such as class record keeping, attending meetings, and report writing.
  • In conjunction with colleagues, carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; obtaining and analysing feedback to help implement ideas for improving personal performance.
  • Contribute to collaborative decision-making with colleagues on academic content, module reviews and the assessment of student work.

  • Attend and participate in the School committees and represent the School if required.

Current registration with the General Optical Council. If you are appointed to patient facing clinics, you will be expected to maintain CPD points to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold registration with NHS Health Board to practice in clinics performing NHS-funded tests. The School will consider applicants who are a Dispensing Optician or Contact Lens Optician who have relevant experience in optometric practice.
  • GOC registration, and relevant experience in optometric practice. You will be expected to maintain GOC registration, and in order to practice as an Optometrist in patient facing clinics at Cardiff University with NHS patients, register with a relevant NHS Health Board. The School will consider applicants who are a GOC registered Contact Lens Optician and has relevant experience in optometric practices.
  • Recent / current experience in an optometric clinical environment. If applying as Optometrist: EHEW accreditation or agreement to undergo accreditation upon commencement of employment.
