West Berkshire Council is seeking a dedicated and skilled Nutrient Mitigation Officer to join our Climate and Ecological Emergency Team, reporting to the Climate and Ecological Emergency Team Leader.The RoleAs a Nutrient Mitigation Officer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the delivery of nutrient mitigation initiatives within the West Berkshire area. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Implementing and managing nutrient mitigation projects to reduce the impact of Phosphate within the River Lambourn catchment in accordance with Habitat Regulations requirements.
  • Working with stakeholders and statutory partners to deliver mitigation projects to help enable the delivery of new housing development (as appropriate) within the catchment area.
  • Developing and managing a nutrient credit platform and seek opportunities for enhanced ecosystem service delivery.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the delivery of nutrient mitigation projects.
  • Collaborating with external partners, such as landowners and conservation organisations, to deliver the Council’s objectives for nutrient neutrality in the River Lambourn Catchment.
  • Providing expert technical advice and guidance to the Council’s planning service, to support the assessment of planning applications under the Habitat Regulations.
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of awareness-raising activities and communications on nutrient mitigation with internal and external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
  • Knowledge and understanding of nutrient pollution, its causes, and ecological impacts.
  • Experience in implementing nutrient mitigation projects.
  • Knowledge of developing and managing a ecosystems services credit platform.
  • Familiarity with planning processes and the ability to provide effective advice to planners.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
