About us Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative project between the world-famous UCL Medawar Pain and Somatosensory Labs and Birkbeck BabyLab and ToddlerLab under the supervision of Profs Lorenzo Fabrizi and Emily Jones to study the link between early sensory experiences and long-term sensory processing abilities in preterm-born neonates and children.About the role The main purpose of this position is to study the early development of somatosensation in preterm infant and how this is related to sensory abilities in childhood using Electroencephalography (EEG) and novel sensory testing paradigms. This will provide an early identification of individual at risk of developing sensory processing challenges and associated neurodisabilities.The post holder will work as part of a new multi-disciplinary collaboration between UCL, UCLH and Birkbeck University which merges the world-class expertise of the centres in preterm brain development and neurodevelopmental assessments. You must be proficient in brain imaging, biosignal processing (preferably EEG), and programming in MATLAB, Phython or similar. You must also demonstrate your ability to communicate well to a multidisciplinary team and write to high standards for impactful publications. You will provide your brain imaging expertise to the team and will assist us in the development, planning and delivery of research funded by the UKRI MRC. You will also liaise with collaborators from Imperial College London on the design novel stimulators and sensors to use in the neonatal unit.
