I'm recruiting for a dynamic Assistant Head of Department to join a leading Further Education College, overseeing Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades across two thriving campuses.This is your chance to shape the future of construction education while leading a dedicated team in delivering outstanding outcomes for students, apprentices, and adult learners.About the Role - Assistant Head of Department - Construction & Building ServicesWorking alongside the Head of Department, you'll drive excellence across Study Programmes, Apprenticeships, and Adult courses. This leadership position combines strategic oversight with hands-on management, ensuring students receive the highest quality education that prepares them for successful careers in construction.Key Responsibilities:Academic Leadership:
- Oversee curriculum development and delivery across Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades
- Lead course team meetings and implement student-centered timetabling
- Embed English & Maths throughout all programmes
- Develop industry partnerships for work experience and curriculum relevance
- Drive outstanding student outcomes and progression rates
- Lead quality assurance processes and performance improvement initiatives
- Implement inclusive teaching practices and assessment methods
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, and behaviour to meet college targets
- Work with Excellence Coach teams to develop pedagogical excellence
- Ensure compliance with awarding body requirements
- Line manage lecturers, instructors, and technicians
- Conduct appraisals and support professional development
- Lead recruitment and induction of new staff members
- Implement cover arrangements and resource planning
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture
- Take full responsibility for departmental Health & Safety
- Complete and maintain accurate risk assessments
- Ensure safe learning environments across both campuses
- Level 5+ teaching qualification (DET, DTLLS, Cert Ed, or PGCE)
- IQA Award or equivalent (or working towards)
- Construction qualification relevant to curriculum area
- Enhanced DBS clearance
- Extensive experience in education/training environments
- Recent FE teaching experience in construction trades
- Team leadership or supervisory experience
- Proven track record of professional development
- Strong industry knowledge in Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and educational software
- Data analysis and performance improvement capabilities
- Flexible, adaptable approach to change management
