We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) Technician to provide dedicated technical support to the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment (GGE). This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in a dynamic and growing multi-disciplinary department.As the ESE Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining and supporting a wide range of laboratory and field equipment, ensuring the smooth delivery of practical classes, and assisting with research projects. Your expertise will be crucial in supporting students, academics, and researchers across the department, helping to maintain the highest standards in education and innovation.Ideally, you will have a background in environmental geology or environmental science, with experience in soil, water and other environmental materials analyses, including, nutrients, metals and other contaminants. You will be responsible for setting up laboratory teaching classes, including chemical solution preparations, instrument calibration and upkeep of the laboratory environment. You will also have experience and knowledge of using a range of analytical, geotechnical and surveying equipment, including maintenance and troubleshooting.Key Responsibilities:- Provide technical and teaching support for a diverse range of laboratory-based teaching, from water and soil analysis to geological engineering experiments.- Assist with the preparation and setup of practical classes, ensuring all equipment and materials are ready for use.- Provide technical support for a range of departmental fieldwork and research activities.- Maintain, calibrate, and operate a variety of specialist equipment, including survey instruments, analytical chemistry and geotechnical apparatus.- Provide technical guidance and training to staff and students on the use of laboratory and field equipment.- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting risk assessments as required.- Manage equipment inventories and oversee the procurement of consumables and replacement parts.- Collaborate with academic staff to develop innovative practical exercises and support research projects.- Forklift driving experience preferable.The PersonThe ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental science/chemistry, geology, or a related discipline, coupled with experience in technical support for laboratory and/or field-based activities. You will have a proactive approach, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.Essential Criteria:- A science-based degree or/and experience in environmental science or geology or a related field (e.g. chemistry, geochemistry, earth science or similar).- Hands-on experience with analytical chemistry, geological and survey equipment, including maintenance and troubleshooting.- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations in a laboratory and fieldwork context.- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and support students and staff.The FacultyThere are few faculties across the UK university landscape as varied in their scope.
