We are seeking a proactive and professional Safety and Security Officer to join our team, ensuring the safety, security and smooth operation of Education, Skills, and Work activities within a custodial environment at HMP Millsike.This is a critical role in maintaining a secure learning and workspace for staff, learners, and prisoners while driving continuous improvement in safety and security procedures. This is a fixed term position for 6 months.Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor access to education, skills, and work facilities within the prison.
  • Conduct regular safety and security checks of classrooms, workshops, and resource areas.
  • Ensure compliance with prison security protocols during sessions.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks or disruptive behaviour.
  • Respond promptly to incidents, breaches, or emergencies.
  • Liaise with prison staff and emergency services as required.
  • Provide a visible, reassuring presence to staff, learners, and prisoners.
  • Support conflict resolution and de-escalation.
  • Participate in risk assessments and contribute to safeguarding strategies.
  • Assist leaders and managers in achieving compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
  • Develop and deliver training where appropriate to support staff development.
  • Investigate incidents and implement preventive measures.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by legislation and company policy.
What we’re looking for:Essential:
  • Hold at least one of the following: NEBOSH/IOSH/other accredited H&S qualification, accredited security qualification/SIA license, accredited construction qualification/CSCS card.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional approach.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage own workload.
  • Ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Recent and relevant experience in a similar role.
Desirable:
  • GCSE English Language Grade C or above.
  • Experience in construction, security, or custodial settings.
  • Experience writing detailed reports.
  • Managing and driving improvement of safety and/or security procedures.
  • Project management experience.
