Advert Close date: 26th September 2025This is a pivotal role in delivering The Crown Estate's (TCE) commitment to deliver a measurable increase in biodiversity across its holdings by 2030. The main purpose of this role is to support the development and deployment of The Crown Estate's Nature Recovery Ambition. We believe that as custodians of diverse urban, rural and marine holdings across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, we must play our part in halting the decline of nature and stewarding the land and sea for future generations. We have a unique opportunity to contribute to nature recovery at a significant scale.This role will play a leading part in developing our Nature Ambition across land and sea, helping shape the planning, target setting and key performance indicators to deliver this Ambition. It will involve working in partnership with the wider Group Sustainability team and nature specialists in the three Strategic Business Units (Windsor and Rural, Marine and Urban).This individual will play a key role in shaping the nature measurement, reporting and verification processes for the whole business. This includes the annual updating of the nature targets and KPIs in collaboration with internal nature specialists, and evolving the processes that support the delivery of targets (such as Digital KPI measurements) to ensure targets and KPIs remains topical/and relevant to the internal landscape and key external standards and approaches (such as Task Nature Financial Disclosures and the Environment Act).This individual will also continue the evolution of our work on TNFD and ensure alignment with wider elements of the nature programme including Water, Partnerships, and People and Nature, and be responsible for the leading several key nature workstreams and their integration into the business.The role will shape and maintain the most effective nature governance linked to wider structures like the Biodiversity Performance, Measurement & Reporting Task and Finish Group, Sustainability Taskforce and Sustainability Committee as well as support the management of some junior staff. It will require management of key stakeholder relationships internally and externally to engage them in the development and deployment of our Nature Ambition.Main accountabilities:
  • Supporting the development of Nature Recovery Ambition and deployment into the business.
  • Delivering TCE's biodiversity baseline and tracking progress against this as the Nature Ambition progresses.
  • Directly support and track the commitments and targets/indicators for the nature ambition.
  • Evolving our nature measurement, reporting and verification approach and its application to the business.
  • Identify and enable the business to support best practice in building nature resilience, including risk and opportunities (e.g. TNFD).
  • Provide expert support and input into the on-going key nature recovery workstreams including data and stakeholder engagement.
  • Collaborate with Net Zero and Thriving Communities leads to ensure nature recovery is integrated into wider sustainability strategies, including climate adaptation and social value creation.
  • Play a key role in defining the capability and shift required to Integrate progressive approaches to nature In line with our strategy and collaborating with the Sustainability Transformation team.
  • Support the development of the business's understanding of key climate and nature interlinks, including input into an integrated transition plan
  • Monitoring the development of nature policy at global, national and devolved administration and advising on implications for TCE.
  • Supporting internal and external communication on nature.
  • Lead and support the development of key external relationships and deputise for the Nature Recovery Director as required at Internal and external meetings.
  • Provide expert advice and support to the business in delivery of our nature ambition.
  • Support the preparation of key presentation materials for senior decision-makers
  • Support the shaping of business planning to deliver the Nature Recovery Ambition.
  • Coach and support to build internal capability to deliver our Nature Recovery Ambition.
  • Support the management of senior executives
Most important skills based requirements:
  • Strong understanding of nature recovery and biodiversity, gained through work across some of the different environments in which The Crown Estate operates (marine, coastal, rural and the urban environment).
  • Track record of helping to shape an organisation's approach to nature.
  • Good working knowledge of key nature frameworks and policies at global, UK and devolved levels and how these may influence business decisions.
  • Ability to engage and influence more senior decision-makers including our Executive leaders and Board members
  • Experience of working with internal teams and partners to deliver best practice nature initiatives (i.e. specific nature recovery projects on land or sea).
  • Very strong communication and relationship management skills with the ability to manage various stakeholders with competing priorities.
  • Collaborator and team player, comfortable with individual and shared accountabilities.
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing priorities whilst still delivering to a high standard.
  • Generous and effective in sharing knowledge and supporting others to grow their skills and experience.
  • Ability to identify and manage nature risks and opportunities, developing effective solutions and mitigating actions.
  • An active listener and effective influencer, able to operate and convene across different levels within the business to influence change
  • Target-driven thinking (to enable target/vision setting)
  • Good existing relationships with nature organisations and stakeholders or a demonstrated ability to be able to develop positive working relationships with such organisations and stakeholders
  • An understanding of assessing how nature interconnects with the wider climate and social impact agenda and delivery of direct benefits to communities through nature-based solutions.
