- Control the design, development, and evaluation of new models from concept to mass production, ensuring they comply with the customer requirements, and liaising with other areas of R&D and other departments to ensure this is fulfilled.
- Provide technical expertise to resolve issues and coordinate development issues into areas of expertise with internal contacts, external suppliers and customers, toolmakers, and other Panasonic organisations.
- Mentor and support other members of the R&D Mechanical section with the technical aspects of their work.
- Support the Project Leaders and Team Leader to ensure relevant project based AQ and R&D documents (NCL, schedule table, BOMs, etc.) are completed in line with the required processes.
- Attend and contribute to relevant development meetings, both internal and external. Ensure that all stakeholders are fully informed as required by providing necessary technical information and updates on any new or ongoing issues, including appropriate responses and actions being taken.
- Fully assess historic problems and endeavour to eradicate them from future designs. Lead and support Engineers in this activity.
- Ensure all mechanical parts are available for sample builds according to agreed schedules.
- Support the Project Leaders and Team Leader in checking and issuing all associated drawings, specifications, and documents (e.g., component specs, assembly instructions, change point analysis, etc.).
- Provide evidence that the relevant customer, Panasonic, regional (e.g., EN), and general product safety directives are considered where appropriate.
- Consider new technology to improve and implement new R&D systems and processes, ensuring efficient product development and future improvement to product development.
- Support the Project Leader to ensure cost requirements for mechanical aspects of development are available when required including samples cost, mass production parts, and tooling cost.
- Support the Project Leader to create and maintain project plans and schedules for mechanical aspects of development.
- Support the Team Leader with the planning of work and allocation of tasks to the R&D Mechanical Design Engineers.
- Support with general testing and evaluation of appliances, assemblies, and components being developed in HAD R&D.
- Support the Team Leader with recruitment activities, where required.
- Degree-level qualification in a relevant Engineering discipline plus five years of relevant industry experience, or least eight years of relevant industry experience in a similar role.
- Extensive experience in a design-led mechanical engineering role, preferably in a high-tech mass production-based company.
- High level of problem-solving skills with the ability to efficiently resolve technical issues.
- Highly experienced in component design (ideally both plastic and sheet metal).
- High level of understanding of manufacturing processes (ideally injection moulding and metal pressing).
- Experience in materials selection.
- Experience in managing projects.
- High level of 3D CAD skills (preferably CATIA V5 and ENOVIA).
- Highly experienced in assembly design.
- Highly experienced in drafting - dimensioning and tolerance.
- Experience in product and component evaluation.
- Knowledge of various quality system methodologies e.g., Lean, 5 Whys, Six Sigma, etc.
- Knowledge of simulation tools e.g., CFD and FEA.
