We seek a dedicated clinical research fellow with a career interest in hepatology, to undertake a specified programme of research activity, under a project titled:Characterising the burden and clinical trajectory in chronic cholestatic diseases. The University of Birmingham and University Hospitals' Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have a strong pedigree of innovation and research excellence in cholestatic liver disease; both at the individual centre level and as part of multicentre collaborative platforms. Our track record is exemplified by high-level clinical trial activity, quality evidence to guide clinical practice, and development of risk stratification algorithms that define treatment response for patients.Main duties of the jobThe principled intent of this programme is to characterise the prevalence of pruritus and its severity, how this varies over time as per the clinical course of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and genetic disorders of cholestasis. This is with a particular view to assess use and effectiveness of current therapeutic interventions. In parallel, the project will detail epidemiological trends in these conditions, and how the incidence and prevalence are changing over time. The appointee will also be expected to support the clinical cholestatic disease service, which includes specialist outpatient clinics and multi-disciplinary team meetings and a large portfolio of clinical trial activity.Specific objectives will be to:*Study the real-world experience and efficacy of therapeutic interventions in chronic cholestatic liver disease, at a local, regional and national level.*Assess how the epidemiology has changed, is changing now, and predicted to change over time.*Determine how changes in disease epidemiology are likely to impact need for newly licensed medicines in cholestatic diseases.*Participate in quality improvement and service delivery, as part of the dedicated Clinical Cholestasis programme.*Ensure effective running of liver clinical trials as part of the University of Birmingham BRCAbout usUniversity Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust strives to have an inclusive culture where everyone feels like they belong, can thrive, knows that they add value and feels valued.
