Location: South KensingtonCloses: 18th September 2025About the role:An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for an Electronics and Electro-Mechanical Technician based in the Department's Geotechnical Engineering laboratory.The post holder will be responsible for the design and delivery of electronic and mechanical services associated with the testing apparatus and rigs for research and teaching.They will also be part of the team responsible for providing general technical support across the Department.This is a full-time, open-ended post.What you would be doing:You will lead in providing electronic/electro-mechanical support services within the Geotechnical laboratories, including designing apparatus and equipment, using specialist machines to develop new techniques, and manufacturing and fabricating electronic circuits and instruments.With a strong understanding of the safe use of equipment and materials, you will monitor laboratory users to ensure Health and Safety standards are upheld.Your role will also involve technical support through the design, construction, assembly, and installation of specialist apparatus used in hydro-mechanical and thermal soil testing.In collaboration with technical, academic, and research staff, you will support the overall management of the physical infrastructure across the Geotechnical workshop and laboratories.What we are looking for:
  • An HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related subject is essential along with completion of a recognised apprenticeship in Electronics or Electrical Engineering. A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Electronics or Electrical Engineering subject is desirable.
  • You will have experience working in an electro/mechanical workshop and be confident using microcomputers and software.
  • You will bring substantial experience with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), and signal generators, as well as a strong track record of using your own initiative, applying innovation, and developing ideas.
  • You will also be able to manage your own workload effectively and demonstrate a collaborative, open-minded approach to working within a team.
  • The ability to work from engineering drawings and written instructions is essential.
