We are working with a specialist primary SEN school in Bury dedicated to supporting children with autism and complex learning needs. Many of our students are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication, and we use a range of alternative communication methods such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and other AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools to support their learning and interaction.The Role:
Teaching Personnel are recruiting on behalf of this specialist school for a caring and skilled Youth Support Assistant. You will play a key role in supporting children with autism, many of whom use alternative communication systems. Your support will help students engage in learning, develop communication skills, and build independence throughout their day.A Typical Day:Assisting children with their individual learning plans, often using PECS or other communication aidsSupporting students during classroom activities, helping them understand instructions and express themselvesEncouraging positive behavior through tailored strategies and routinesHelping students participate in social interactions and play during breaksAssisting with personal care and daily living skills when neededCollaborating closely with teachers, therapists, and families to provide consistent supportKey Responsibilities:Support students who are non-verbal or have limited speech, using PECS, sign language, or other AAC methodsHelp implement personalized learning and communication strategiesPromote calm, structured, and predictable environments to support students’ needsEncourage independence and confidence through daily activitiesObserve and report on students’ progress and behavior to the teamWhat We’re Looking F
