BSL Teaching AssistantMiddlesbroughImmediate Start - Long term positionWe are currently recruiting on behalf of a mainstream school in Middlesbrough for a BSL Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a deaf student. The ideal candidate will hold at least a Level 2 BSL qualification and have a passion for supporting students in a mainstream classroom setting. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in a student's educational journey while working within a supportive and inclusive school environment.Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide 1:1 support to a hearing impaired student, ensuring they can fully access the curriculum and participate in classroom activities.
  • Assist in the implementation of strategies outlined in the student’s EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan).
  • Support the student with communication needs, including using BSL to facilitate their understanding of lessons.
  • Help the student develop key skills in language, reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics.
  • Foster an inclusive environment that encourages the student’s independence, confidence, and social integration.
  • Collaborate closely with the class teacher to adapt lessons and materials to meet the student’s needs.
  • Monitor the student’s progress and contribute to regular reviews and feedback regarding their development.
  • Assist with the preparation of learning materials and resources tailored to the student's learning style.
  • Support the student during extracurricular activities, school trips, and other out-of-classroom events.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and support the student in managing their physical and emotional needs in line with the school’s Behaviour Policy.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
Essential Requirements:
  • Level 2 BSL (British Sign Language) qualification as a minimum.
  • Previous experience supporting students with hearing impairments, ideally in a mainstream setting.
  • A positive, patient, and proactive attitude with a commitment to inclusion and student success.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, other staff members, and the student’s family.
