Head Gardener Vacancy – 35 Hours per weekWe have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to lead our horticultural team at Knebworth House – one of the finest examples of a Sir Edwin Lutyens garden.Knebworth House is the historic home to the Lytton Cobbold Family and sits within Knebworth Park and is the centre piece of the Knebworth Estate. The gardens are managed by a dedicated management team based at the Estate Office, a short distance from the House. The Estate is open to the public from March to September. We also host large and small events, concerts, and filming throughout the year.To be successful in this role, you will be committed to working in a heritage context, gardening for the enjoyment of the visiting public, the resident family, and the preservation and education trust.You will be responsible for a team of three full-time gardeners plus part-time gardeners, volunteers and occasional work experience students. Your main responsibilities will be the maintenance and development of the 28 acres or ornamental gardens, walled garden, and private garden ensuring excellent standards of horticulture and plantsmanship are planned and delivered. A proven track record of high quality horticultural work is required. You will be expected to support and manage the gardens team and oversee students and volunteers. You will need to keep the MD informed of strategic work planned for the gardens, to gain approval before commencement. You will be responsible for managing the expenditure of the annual Revenue and Capital budgets, once set by MD and trustees, and with guidance by MD based on monthly cash flow.Candidates must have NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, RHS Level 3, HND, OND, City & Guilds, at least six years experience of working in a public garden, supervisory as well as people management and communication skills, comprehensive plant knowledge, a clear understanding of the relevant Health and Safety legislation, formal training in manual handling and risk assessment, a valid driving licence and PA1 and PA6a certificatesThis private advert is being managed directly by the employer.
