Position:Design ManagerLocation:Hatfield, HertfordshireSalary:£65,000-£75,000 + Car Allowance + Bonus SchemeAbout the Design Manager RoleAn established Tier 1 contractor is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join their regional team, supporting the delivery of high-profile residential and refurbishment schemes. With a strong pipeline of fire safety remediation and re-cladding projects (including Higher Risk Buildings), this permanent position offers excellent career development in a technically challenging and growing sector.Working across pre-construction and delivery, you'll lead the design process from bid stage through to start on site, ensuring all technical information is coordinated, compliant, and aligned with programme and budget objectives.Responsibilities of the Design Manager
  • Lead the design process across pre-construction and live projects
  • Review ERs and support the production of Contractor's Proposals
  • Develop and manage design programmes in line with project timelines
  • Coordinate design consultants, surveys, and approvals
  • Chair design meetings and ensure deliverables are tracked and met
  • Identify and manage design risks, change control, and compliance issues
  • Review drawings for buildability, cost-efficiency, and statutory compliance
  • Liaise with planning, building control, warranty providers, and statutory bodies
  • Support pre-construction bid teams with technical input
  • Mentor and support junior team members (Design Coordinators/Assistants)
Requirements of the Design Manager
  • Previous experience in a similar role with a main contractor or developer
  • Proven track record delivering refurbishment, remediation, or residential schemes
  • Strong working knowledge of Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act
  • Ability to lead external design teams and manage complex technical information
  • Confident in client-facing meetings and stakeholder coordination
  • Experience with fire remediation or façade/cladding projects is highly desirable
  • Strong communication and programme management skills
