
FPGA & DSP Engineer (Quantum RF)

- Collaborate seamlessly with a multidisciplinary team to orchestrate the development of atom-based quantum technologies, with a focus on quantum RF sensors and atomic clocks.
- Engineer electronic solutions tailored for controlling subsystems, such as laser and optical frequency comb drivers, optical and electronic amplifiers, photodetectors, thermal sensors, and RF signal chains.
- Implement real-time and pipelined digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms on high-speed signals within an FPGA including FIR/IIR filters, I/Q frequency mixers, and similar.
- Writing automated test benches to verify designs.
- Debug of complex embedded systems comprising hardware, software (processor) and firmware (FPGA) designs.
- Create high speed interfaces from FPGA to hardware peripherals such as ADCs, DACs, DDS, PLL and other devices.
- Execute high-speed feedback control systems (PID and similar) on an FPGA.
- Collaborate closely with software, electronics and systems engineers to design and realise new FPGA-based peripherals.
- Employ precision test and measurement equipment to characterize and test systems.
- Conduct critical design reviews based on product specifications.
- Create, document, and maintain designs and architectural blueprints.
- Effectively manage technical priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver on project objectives.
- Significant experience working in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in implementing DSP algorithms, digital transceivers, and control loops on FPGAs using VHDL/Verilog/System Verilog.
- Ability to analyse solutions and make prototype design trade-offs.
- Strong desire to dive deep into system level issues and drive problems to closure in a team-based environment with a proactive attitude.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of digital and RF hardware, including its limitations and its impact on system performance.
- Competence in controlling FPGA IP blocks programmatically via software, through e.g. AXI bus.
- Proficiency in interfacing with peripheral hardware devices through standard communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and others.
- Experience in hardware product development, new product introduction, and familiarity with Product Life Cycle processes.
- Hands-on experience with electrical test, verification, and validation of products and subsystems.
- Experience of developing with FPGA SoC/SoM devices such as Xilinx Zynq. Experience with Xilinx RFSoCs highly advantageous.
- Experience in designing for Radio Frequency products and experience using associated test equipment such as RF Signal Generators, Spectrum Analysers, Network Analysers.
- PCB design experience (schematic capture, PCB layout, component creating all desirable).
- Design experience with C/C++ for embedded systems.
- Design experience/working knowledge of Python to aid verification and test.
- Experience with embedded systems programming in C/C++ or Rust.
- Familiarity with software version control systems such as git.
- Familiarity with Software-Defined-Radio systems.
- Familiarity with common laser frequency stabilisation methods.
