Primary SEND Teaching Assistant Location: Sherborne, Dorset Contract: Full-time, Monday to Friday Pay: £89 - £95 per day Start Date: September 2025 The role We are seeking a committed and compassionate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Teaching Assistant to join a well-regarded mainstream primary school in Sherborne, Dorset. This full-time role is based within Key Stage 2 and will involve providing high-quality one-to-one support for pupils with trauma and attachment needs. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting both the academic progress and emotional development of pupils, enabling them to achieve their full potential within an inclusive learning environment. Key responsibilities: • Provide targeted support to pupils with a range of SEND, with a particular focus on trauma and attachment needs. • Work collaboratively with the class teacher to deliver and adapt individual learning and support plans. • Create a safe, nurturing, and supportive classroom environment that promotes engagement and learning. • Employ a range of strategies to support communication, learning, and behaviour management. • Encourage positive social interaction and participation in class and school activities. • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress, achievements, and areas for development. • Apply de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies sensitively and effectively. • Assist in the preparation of learning resources tailored to individual needs. • Engage in professional development opportunities, particularly in trauma and attachment approaches. Candidate requirements • Previous experience of working with children in an educational setting, ideally with SEND. • Understanding of trauma and attachment and their impact on learning and behaviour. • Relevant qualifications (NVQ Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent) are desirable but not essential. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents. • Patience, empathy, and resilience, with a strong commitment to supporting children's wellbeing and progress. • A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. • An Enhanced DBS certificate on the update service (or willingness to obtain one).
