Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts.See your commuteThis Assistant Vice President role sits within the Secured Regulated Lending Legal team, which is part of the wider BUK Consumer Products legal team. The team is responsible for legal advice and legal risk management, acting as trusted advisors supporting business areas providing regulated mortgage contracts and retail buy to let mortgages (incl. BUK Mortgages and Private Bank). You will work in a friendly and passionate team of regulatory experts.To be successful in this role you will:
  • be a UK qualified or other commonwealth qualified lawyer and a consumer product regulatory expert with a proven track record of using these skills in an advisory capacity to oversee key product and proposition innovation and simplification;
  • have experience of advising on mortgages or retail lending preferred. You will use this experience to proactively identify new and emerging legal and regulatory risks by providing consistently excellent advice and guidance that is supported by clear rationale and justification.
  • have strong communication skills and ability to build relationships.
You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.This role can be based in Glasgow or Manchester.Purpose of the roleTo ensure that the consumer banking activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and regulatory risks associated with these activities.Accountabilities
  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Proactive consumer banking Legal advice and support to the consumer banking division of the bank on a wide range of legal issues, including regulatory compliance, regulatory change management, consumer protection, and risk management.
  • Creation and periodic review of Legal documents in accordance with contractual arrangements policy to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's consumer banking operations.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

  • To advise and influence decision making, contribute to policy development and take responsibility for operational effectiveness. Collaborate closely with other functions/ business divisions.
  • Consult on complex issues; providing advice to People Leaders to support the resolution of escalated issues.
  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Communicate complex information. 'Complex' information could include sensitive information or information that is difficult to communicate because of its content or its audience.
  • Influence or convince stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
