A leading tax team seeks a Senior Contentious Tax Lawyer (7+ years PQE) to join its London office. The role involves high-profile tax litigation, advising corporate clients, public sector bodies, and institutional investors on dispute avoidance and resolution strategies involving HMRC. The team handles landmark cases, including matters before the Supreme Court, HMRC investigations into complex statutory issues, and high-value cross-border disputes.
Recent Work Includes:
- Supreme Court proceedings on deductibility of management expenses.
- Representing a foreign tax authority on jurisdictional issues in commercial fraud litigation.
- Advising a multinational alcohol producer on excise duty investigations.
- Defending a Premier League football club during an HMRC probe into third-party payments.
- Guiding investment managers on VAT applications for innovative products.

Provide strategic counsel to clients on how to structure transactions and operations to minimise the risk of disputes with HMRC. Offer guidance on compliance and early resolution.Managing tax investigations and leading the response to HMRC audits and inquiries. Coordinate internal reviews and manage communications and disclosures with tax authorities.Representing clients in litigation
Develop and execute litigation strategies in tribunal and court proceedings. Present legal arguments and assess potential outcomes and risks.Interpreting tax legislation and case law
Analyse tax statutes and legal precedents to support or challenge assessments. Monitor legal developments to keep clients updated and prepared.Engaging with HMRC and counsel
Negotiate with HMRC and work closely with external counsel on technical and procedural matters. Draft and review legal submissions and correspondence.Supervising and mentoring junior lawyers
Oversee junior team members in tasks such as legal research and document preparation. Provide support and mentorship to develop team capability.Client development and relationship management
Strengthen relationships with existing clients and support the firm's business development efforts by identifying new opportunities and participating in thought leadership.Experience You will be a seasoned tax litigator with experience in both direct and indirect tax, HMRC powers, and litigation across tribunals and courts. Strong knowledge of judicial review and alternative remedies is essential. You'll be adept at managing high-value disputes independently while supporting junior colleagues and contributing to strategic planning.
