The aim is develop solutions for core elements of our products using a focused team of experts in the field, in order to reduce development timescales, leverage scarce skillsets, and foster re-use across products.The AESA CDT Lead is responsible for leadership and management of the AESA CDT in developments ranging in scope from front-end chipset designs to full LRI (Line Replaceable Item) level solutions. The CDT works across the full product lifecycle; from innovation and low-TRL (Technology Readiness Level) development, technology demonstrator programmes to full series production design, develop, demonstration and qualification programmes. The team are also engaged in support to fielded product and the Productionisation of demonstrator artefacts.As a provider of specialised solutions into the wider radar system product this role requires close working with IPT (Integrated Product Team) leadership, procurement and the new product introduction/manufacturing team.Products and technology demonstrator programmes supported by the AESA CDT include Grifo-E, Raven, ECRS Mk 0 and Mk 2, Jaguar and Tempest with future prospects including Raven Mk 2 and the GCAP programme across product ranges and business sectors.The AESA CDT Lead will:
  • Management of the multi-disciplinary AESA CDT in the delivery of the engineering solutions on time, to cost and performance.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the CTO and capability function and work to develop the strategy for antenna technology development.
  • Identify opportunities to develop technologies and people to maintain our position at the forefront of airborne AESA design.
  • Develop a knowledge of critical supply chain elements - e.g. GaAs/GaN/SiGe & QFNs, and foster relations with key suppliers
  • Work with customers and suppliers to understand technologies and coordinate development activities to align with capabilities across sectors and product lines
  • Manage team workload and priorities; provide estimates; evaluate, manage and mitigate engineering risks
  • Ensure the CDT solution is integrated within the overall product engineering plan, establishing key milestones and interdependencies and adherence to the relevant engineering standards
  • Manage and support Project Engineering Leads in the preparation of monthly Programme reporting on Cost and Schedule performance
  • Ensure Critical Design Features, e.g. Unit Production Cost, yield, KPIs (RF parameters etc), are defined, tracked and managed across the portfolio
  • Promote design commonality and re-use within the team, and promote best practice use of the team’s engineering resources across the business
  • Work closely with the other CDT leads to ensure compatible systems and identify any opportunities for commonality.
  • Ensure that a “product” ethos is adopted for all AESA designs to minimise both non-recurring and recurring engineering costs.

In addition, it would be advantageous to have knowledge and practical design experience of some of the following;
  • Work package management, including; plans and estimates, scheduling and risk management processes
  • Previous experience in related technologies is preferred (RF/Microwave, Packaging, PCA design for example)
  • Knowledge and experience of semiconductor wafer foundry processes and QFN component manufacture and test
  • Research and development of new technologies/ tools/ processes within design, development and manufacture for high reliability products
  • Technical support to sub-contracts and engineering interface with manufacturing.
