As Project Design Manager, you’ll lead the technical delivery of major infrastructure projects from initial feasibility through to detailed design and handover. You’ll coordinate multi-disciplinary teams to produce designs that are practical, sustainable, and aligned with agreed cost, time, and quality targets.
Acting as a key contact throughout the project lifecycle, you’ll work closely with project leaders, engineers, construction teams, and stakeholders to ensure smooth, efficient delivery. This is a hands-on, collaborative role at the heart of some of the region’s most significant infrastructure projects.

- Lead the design process on major capital projects from concept through to detailed design and assurance.
- Ensure design outputs are fully integrated, meeting operational, commercial, and environmental goals.
- Act as Principal Designer under CDM regulations, managing design risks and embedding safety at every stage.
- Promote digital design excellence, championing BIM and 3D modelling to improve coordination and outcomes.
- Challenge and enhance technical standards, encouraging innovative, low-carbon, and cost-effective solutions.
- Coordinate with project leaders to plan and allocate design resources effectively, keeping technical delivery on track.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure designs meet operational and community needs.
- Champion best practice in quality, health and safety, and performance across the Alliance.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers, fostering a positive learning culture and developing future talent.
- Degree, HNC, or HND in civil engineering or a related field
- Proven leadership experience in design or engineering for complex infrastructure or water projects
- Knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations, with experience as Principal Designer or in managing design risk
- Strong understanding of multi-disciplinary project delivery, ideally within an alliance or joint venture
- Proficiency with digital design tools, BIM workflows, and integrated processes
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and lead at all levels
