If speculative CVs are sent, no fee will be applicable - please direct all queries to the relevant Resourcing Partner.Health, Safety & ENVIRONMENT MANAGER - BuldingguildofrdWhat you will be doing:An opportunity has arisen for a Health, Safety & Environment Manager to join the team at Galliford Try within our Build Division.Ideally, you will based in or around the Guildford area and will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites/projects in the Region.As HS&E Manager for the Building Southern business unit, you will provide visible leadership and management of all Health, Safety and Environmental activities. You will be directly accountable for driving HS&E strategy, performance, and culture across the business unit and supply chain partners.Reporting to the Head of HS&E, you will lead and develop the HS&E team within your business unit, ensuring consistent standards, proactive risk management, and a culture that prioritises health, safety, and environmental excellence.This role requires a strong leader capable of influencing senior stakeholders, managing and developing a team of HS&E professionals, and ensuring our HS&E systems deliver both compliance and continual improvement.
- Lead the Building Southern business unit on all HS&E matters, setting clear expectations, and holding operational and supply chain leaders accountable for performance.
- Manage, coach, and develop HS&E Advisors, ensuring their work aligns with business priorities and delivers measurable improvements.
- Translate the Group HS&E strategy into actionable plans for the business unit, ensuring delivery against both short-term targets and long-term cultural objectives.
- Work proactively with the Business Unit Managing Director and senior leadership team to embed HS&E in decision-making and operational planning.
- Build strong relationships with supply chain partners, driving consistent HS&E standards, compliance with our business management system, and cultural alignment.
- Act as a role model and champion for our behavioural change programme, Challenging Beliefs, Affecting Behaviour, ensuring this is embedded across all levels.
- Take ownership of business unit HS&E performance reporting, ensuring trends are identified, risks are escalated, and actions are closed in a timely manner.
- Ensure high-quality incident investigations are completed, learning is shared, and preventative actions are embedded into business practices.
- Lead on HS&E elements of business unit bids, pre-construction activities, and client engagement to ensure our proposals and delivery demonstrate best-in-class standards.
- Support the development of industry-leading training and awareness programmes, ensuring managers and frontline staff are engaged and competent.
- Strong leadership, management, and coaching skills, with experience in developing teams and individuals.
- Extensive knowledge of the construction industry and practical delivery of site operations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to influence, challenge, and support senior stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate Group HS&E strategy into practical delivery within a business unit.
- Proven ability to drive cultural change and embed behaviours across a large and complex organisation.
- Results-focused, with the ability to manage performance through clear objectives and accountability.

- Demonstrable experience of operating in a HS&E management role (or equivalent) with leadership responsibility.
- Track record of delivering cultural change and performance improvement at a business unit or regional level.
- Ability to travel extensively across the assigned business unit.
- Degree or recognised qualification in Health, Safety and/or Environmental management.
- Chartered or professional membership of IOSH, IEMA, or equivalent (or working towards).
