The National Specialist Adolescent Mood disorders Service (NSAMS) is looking to recruit a dynamic Mental Health nurse practitioner at band 6. The post holder requires clinical experience in working with young people under the age of 18 years and experience of working with young people with mood disorders and co-occurring conditions is desirable. The post holder will contribute to a highly specialist national tertiary clinical service as part of a multidisciplinary team for referrals to NSAMS for second opinion assessments and advice on management. The community practitioner will also carry a case load with specific case management duties. The successful applicant will receive excellent ongoing support and training to develop their skills for the role of working into a specialist, second opinion service.The service accepts referrals from across the UK so the ability to travel for appointments is essential. This will include some overnight stays on occasions. Car driver is essential.Main duties of the jobThe community practitioner responsibilities also include:
  • Physical health monitoring of patients
  • Contribution in professional consultation meetings for local clinicians
  • Assist with delivery of bipolar/mood disorders training
  • Support engagement with young people and their carers
  • Offer advice on medication to young people and their families

  • Professional Qualification and current Professional Registration as, a First Level Registered Nurse (RNMH, RMN, RNLD) or equivalent as an AHP, Social Worker or Clinical Psychologist
  • Mentor Training.
  • Evidence of post-registration training in clinical/ psychological interventions / skills relevant to the post.
  • Proven track record of post registration clinical experience relevant to the post.
  • Training in CPA (Care Programme Approach), Safeguarding, MAPPA (Multi Agency Panel for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults) and Child Protection.
  • Up-to-date knowledge/experience of relevant legislation.
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential
  • 12 to 24 month band 5 qualified nurse experience dependent upon service need.
  • Awareness and understanding of professional accountability, NMC standards and other local and national initiatives.
Skills and CompetenciesEssential
  • Proven ability to carry out and provide comprehensive written assessments of individuals with complex mental health needs.
  • Risk Assessment and Risk Management / Safety Planning skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective & appropriate treatment options including a range of evidence based clinical approaches as identified in N.I.C.E. Guidance).
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of a high level of professional, organisational and leadership skills (self & others). Ability to adapt within a changing environment
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use electronic recording and relevant IT equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with other professionals using a multi-agency approach.
