This apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with formal education to develop the skills needed for a career in this field.Key aspects of a GSE Apprentice Mechanic role:Hands-on experience:Apprentices work alongside experienced technicians to gain practical knowledge in servicing, maintaining, and repairing GSE.Technical training:Apprenticeships include time dedicated to formal training, such as a Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3) course, to gain professional knowledge and skills.Diverse equipment:Apprentices will work on a wide variety of equipment, including cars, HGVs, and airport vehicles, up to 80-tonne aircraft tractors.Safety and compliance:Apprentices learn to operate all tools and equipment safely and adhere to relevant safety and operational standards.Troubleshooting and repair:Apprentices will be involved in diagnosing and repairing faults in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, potentially working from schematics and technical manuals.Airport environment:The work is often fast-paced and requires adaptability to the unique environment of an airport, including potential breakdowns and unscheduled repairs.Typical responsibilities include:
  • Performing safety inspections, oil changes, lubrication work, and basic maintenance.
  • Assisting technicians with repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Interpreting and working from electrical schematics and technical manuals.
  • Keeping accurate service records and reporting issues promptly
