Salary: Competitive, based on experienceOn behalf of a leading specialist construction and engineering business, we're looking for a highly experienced Technical Lead to drive technical excellence and robust design solutions for the Steelwork division. The steelwork division is at the forefront of design, fabrication, welding, and installation for high-profile infrastructure and mission-critical projects, combining technical excellence with buildability and safety from concept to completion.You will lead multi-disciplinary teams, and ensure cost-effective, compliant project delivery across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects.This is an ideal role for a strategic thinker who is a strong leader and has a passion for technical excellence and commercial impact. - Define and lead the steelwork technical strategy across multiple projects.
- Oversee structural design, calculations, and steel detailing, ensuring buildability from the outset.
- Approve fabrication drawings, welding procedures (WPS), and inspection/test plans.
- Ensure compliance with Eurocodes, BS EN 1090, BS EN ISO 3834, and HSE/CDM requirements.
- Integrate design with fabrication and erection methodology to maximise efficiency and safety.
- Review and approve lifting plans, erection sequencing, and site method statements.
- Engage with estimators and quantity surveyors to align technical and commercial decisions.
- Manage design programmes, resource allocation, and risk registers.
- Mentor engineers, designers, and technicians, building technical capability across the division.
- Champion innovation in steelwork processes, BIM integration, and digital engineering tools.
- Shape the technical culture of the steelwork division.
- Drive early-stage buildability reviews to reduce risk and rework.
- Oversee the full technical lifecycle from design to final bolt-up.
- Ensure quality and compliance in fabrication, welding, and on-site erection.
- Promote safety-first thinking in every design and installation decision.
- Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (or related discipline) with Chartered status (CEng, MIStructE, or equivalent) preferred.
- Extensive experience in steelwork design, fabrication, welding, and site installation.
- Proven success in integrating technical excellence with commercial strategy.
- Strong understanding of buildability, temporary works, and erection sequencing.
- Deep knowledge of CDM Regulations and health & safety leadership.
- Expertise in project management, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement as well as excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
