This is generally one week in six (24/7) however some flexibility is required.Location: You will be expected to attend The Court House, Woburn Street, Ampthill, MK45 2HX as well as any other CBC office location as often as needed to carry out your role, which will be no less than twice per week.Contract Type: Hybrid - PermanentClosing Date: 26th September 2025Interview Date: TBCMore about the role:The Coroner Service is responsible for investigating deaths that are sudden, violent, suspicious, or unnatural within its jurisdiction, which covers the three local authorities of Bedford Borough, Luton Borough, and Central Bedfordshire. Central Bedfordshire Council acts as the lead authority.As a Coroner's Officer, you will represent the interests of the Senior Coroner by providing a professional investigative service and supporting the delivery of their legal and public protection duties, in line with relevant legislation and national guidance.You will be responsible for receiving notifications of deaths and conducting thorough investigations to establish the circumstances and causes. This will involve liaising with professionals across legal, health, and regulatory sectors, as well as working closely with bereaved families. You will arrange for the identification of the deceased, coordinate post-mortem examinations, and ensure the prompt release of bodies to families or funeral directors. You may also be required to attend the scene of major incidents or multiple fatalities on behalf of the Senior Coroner.You will manage case files from initial report through to inquest, ensuring accurate and timely documentation using a fully digital, paperless system in line with the service's modern working practices. A high level of IT competence is therefore essential.To be considered for this role, you must have a good standard of education, including English and Maths. You should have previous experience working in a Coroner's Office or hold demonstrable experience in an investigative role within a legal, healthcare, police, or regulatory setting. The ability to work independently, use initiative, and interpret and explain complex legislation is essential.You must also be confident in engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds and have experience supporting individuals in emotional distress, particularly the bereaved.
