Activities aimed at proving a concept to be valid or technically feasible by the application of scientific and engineering methodologies.As lead engineer, the successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new electronic applications, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”. This is a highly exciting and dynamic field of power engineering, in which GE’s leading contributions have garnered worldwide recognition.The role of Lead Electronic Hardware Engineer gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised company in this exciting field.The role has a level of autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. A degree of judgment will be required at this level, but can be supplemented by guidance where required.Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, there may be some international travels to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers and contract customers.The Candidate :The candidate requires electronics expertise at the graduate level or equivalent experience, with a good level of technical understanding of digital and analogue electronic design for an industrial power electronics system.The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and understanding of electronic components & principles.The candidate should demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge.An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods, and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.At this level, it is expected that some level of judgment and the ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters, but with guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources to arrive at decisions.Job DescriptionResponsibilities:
- Able to work to deadlines with high quality and accuracy.
- Dynamic and proactive with the ability to work on own or as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to resolve technical issues.
- EHS compliance in design and engineering.
- Controllership and ROHS / REACH compliance.
- Digital electronic circuit design and development.
- Analogue electronic circuit design and development.
- Schematic capture supervision.
- PCB layout supervision, including rules & constraints.
- Electronic component selection, analysis, and qualification testing.
- Component-level design error testing and analysis.
- FPGA component selection.
- Product verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing) testing.
- Type testing - EMC, Environmental, Halt.
- Electronic design for EMC.
- PCB interactions within power electronics systems.
- Design for manufacture (DFM), test (DFT), industrialisation & design to cost.
- Has practical electronic bench testing experience.
- Design failure mode & effect analysis (DFMEA).
- Root cause analysis. Has the ability to participate in problem solving activities such as 8D or similar.
- Has some knowledge and experience of firmware code development.
- Has some knowledge and experience of model based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice).
- Has knowledge of HVDC.
- Has experience of maintaining legacy products including updates and improvements to extend product life span.
