Skilled Gardener – Part TimeA rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and hands-on gardener to join a beautiful private estate near Dorking, Surrey. The current gardener is now leaving the role after a wonderful 15-years with the owners. This permanent, part-time position offers the chance to work within well-established and thoughtfully maintained gardens, providing variety and satisfaction in a stunning rural setting. We are seeking a skilled gardener based locally, available to work 3 days per week. The role is offered on a PAYE basis.Over the years the 4-acre gardens have been re-designed by one of the UK’s most celebrated garden and landscape designers, Chris Beardshaw. The gardens feature a multitude of garden rooms providing a great wealth of horticultural elements. Also within the gardens is a large kitchen garden, an orchard, formal lawns, wildflower meadow, herbaceous borders, formal topiary and a promenade of pleached lime trees and swimming pool garden. Although the gardens are well established, the owners are open to ideas the Skilled Gardener will have with regards to the further development of the gardens; therefore candidates with a creative flair are welcomed.General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging, crop rotation, seasonal mulch and compost management. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role within a private estate setting. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.The preferred working days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; however the owners may be flexible with this for the right candidate, with working hours 8:00am – 4:00pm and holiday entitlement being 12 days.
