Duties of the RoleWe are looking for a Maintenance Craftsperson who will be responsible for On-site maintenance, mechanical installations and testing associated with the building services, plant and equipment in all of the premises owned and operated by the University of Essex.The successful candidate will become the Competent Person (CP) or Authorised Person (AP) for working on mechanical plant and systems across the University Estate in accordance with University Policy and procedures.You will be responsible for the following:
  • Diagnosing and repairing faults in complicated mechanical installations, plant and equipment.
  • Undertaking inspection and testing of mechanical installations to current industry and statutory standards.
  • Understanding the complete working of mechanical systems in the University Estate.
  • Fault finding on all types of mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Carrying out work involved in statutory and pre planned maintenance inspections, complying with the requirements of the Labour Management System.
  • Carrying out duties in a manner that is safe to themselves, colleagues and the public and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate logs of all plant operations and reporting any untoward occurrences immediately to the Mechanical Supervisor.
The full list of duties can be found in the job pack.Hours of work are 36 hours per week, to be worked over a shift system of 7am - 7pm. Weekend working is expected to be 1 weekend in 6 but flexibility is required. The post holder will be expected to cover the 'on-call' rota, which is anticipated to be 1 week in 12.Qualifications and Skills RequiredThe successful candidate will have completed a recognised C&G or registered programme of training regarding Mechanical installations, maintenance and repair (working towards for grade 5). You will also possess a relevant NVQ level 2 or City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related industry (working towards for grade 5).It is essential that the successful candidate has the ability to communicate effectively with members of staff, students and colleagues in the Estate Management Section and be willing to learn, adopt and apply new methods of working, be versatile and show flexibility in your approach to work.This post is Grade 6; however, appointments will be made at Grade 5 level on a developmental basis.
