ABC Teachers is seeking an experienced Learning Support Assistant to work in an SEN School in Nuneaton on a full-time basis from September.About the role:
  • As a Learning Support Assistant in a specialist SEN school, you will work closely with pupils aged 11–17 with Autism (ASC), many of whom have additional needs including social, emotional and mental health challenges, communication difficulties, and varying levels of cognitive or learning needs.
  • Support speech and language development or work alongside speech therapists.
  • Understand and help manage behaviours related to autism, including meltdowns or sensory sensitivities.
  • Implement strategies from the student’s behaviour support plan or EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan).
  • Maintain consistency and routine to reduce anxiety and build trust.
  • Help with transitions between activities or settings, which can be especially challenging for autistic students.
  • Adapt teaching materials or instructions to suit the student’s learning style.
  • Track progress and communicate with the teacher and SENCO.
  • Identify sensory triggers and help the student self-regulate.

  • Working in small groups and a 1:1 setting, using visual supports, clear routines, and de-escalation strategies to reduce anxiety and help students feel safe and understood.
  • The school works collaboratively with teachers, therapists, families, and the pupils themselves to ensure consistency and progress.
About you:We are looking for candidates who have: -
  • An understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and other associated needs (e.g. social, emotional and mental health needs, communication difficulties, or learning disabilities).
  • Experience working with children, young people, or adults with behavioural challenges or special needs.
  • Voluntary or paid work in educational, youth work, or care settings would be considered.
  • A calm, understanding, and non-judgmental approach.
  • Willingness to build trust and form positive relationships with neurodivergent students.
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and in challenging situations.
  • Able to provide appropriate references and pass a DBS check.
