General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and support the clinicians in the smooth running of the surgery by handling routine administration and some basic clinical duties enabling the clinician to focus on the patient. Full training will be provided.Our GPAs will provide administrative and clinical support to our surgery staff, enabling them to make the best use of consultation time, as part of a multi-disciplinary, primary-care team, contributing to the smooth running of our GP Practices. General Practice Assistants will operate under the supervision of GPs and at times other appropriately qualified clinicians. The assistant will undertake a training programme, if not already accreditedMain duties of the jobDuties may encompass the following duties:Supporting with both the review & the recall system for Long Term Condition reviewsSupporting clinicians with undertaking basic clinical activity prior to planned clinicsCreating & maintaining personalised & patient centred care plansTackling Health inequalities, promoting patient engagement & health promotionSorting, prioritising & signposting incoming clinical correspondence, extracting required information & applying medical codes to patient records. This will include scanning clinical and administrative letters into the clinical system.Summarising patient records, extracting required information & applying medical codes to digitised notesArranging appropriate referrals both internally or externally, signposting patients, arranging tests & follow up appointmentsSupporting clinicians with administrative tasks.Complete basic (non-opinion) forms & core elements of some forms for the GP to approve & sign.Help the GP liaise with external agencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP can continue with their consultations)About usWe are a forward-thinking and collaborative Primary Care Network (PCN) dedicated to enhancing patient care and supporting healthcare professionals. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels. You will work within your capabilities and:Sorting of clinical post and prioritising, directly dealing with all routine clinical post.Extracting information from clinical letters that need coding supporting with clinical coding and summarising protocols.Preparing patients, explaining treatment procedures to patients, including arranging follow up appointments, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointmentArrange referrals on behalf of the clinician both internally (to other clinicians or care coordinators/social prescribers/health and wellbeing coaches) or externally (to the hospital or community clinics)Supporting clinicians with administrative tasks, input to the clinical computer system and assisting the clinician in a variety of clinics.Complete simple clinical observations/investigations as directed, such as dipstick urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs, phlebotomy etc.Complete basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign (such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.)Help the GP liaise with external agencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP can continue with their consultations)Supporting with QOF reviewsSupporting the recall system for Long Term Condition reviewsPromote comfort and well-being by ensuring that patients personal and social needs are met and be able to care for a patients nursing needs.This job description is not exhaustive and is seen as a guideline for the post.
