JOB DESCRIPTIONJOB TITLESonographerDIRECTORATEIntegrated Surgery, Cancer and Clinical Support servicesDEPARTMENTDiagnostic ImagingBAND7RESPONSIBLE TOLead Sonographer / Service ManagerACCOUNTABLE TOHead of Radiology & Lead RadiologistRESPONSIBLE FORTrainee sonographers, Radiographer helpersJOB SUMMARY Act as an autonomous practitioner whilst maintaining a close working relationship with Lead Sonographer, Service Manager and key referring Clinicians to deliver an efficient, high quality Ultrasound service To support the effective planning, development, organisation and delivery of Ultrasound and specific, well defined sub-speciality ultrasound training for sonographers and medical staff working collaboratively with the Lead Sonographer and Lead Radiologist; To provide highly specialist, expert clinical ultrasound knowledge, acting as a clinical resource in the ultrasound department To partake in undergraduate and postgraduate Ultrasound training across all grades including supervising, motivating and developing other staff as appropriate To provide specialist input into the Trust clinical governance agenda, influencing the delivery of patient care, as appropriate, working at any site as requiredMAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES1. Maintain own advanced and extensive technical standards in ultrasound; attendingrelevant courses and show evidence of CPD. Fulfill mandatory training requirements and partake in the appraisal process.2. Maintain enhanced, highly specialist clinical competency in ultrasound as required.3. Undertake ultrasound examinations of the required highest standard maintaining a high standard of patient care.4. Interpret ultrasound images, providing an independent report for each examination; refer for further imaging /consultation within directorate protocols.5. Ensure that all equipment is used appropriately and maintained on a daily basis, taking corrective action regarding faults to minimise service downtime.6. Take advantage of in service training, visits to other specialist departments and other opportunities for self-development.7. Demonstrate exceptional communication skills and professionalism with all service users during the ultrasound examination including the imparting of bad news where appropriate - under agreed, approved directorate protocols.8. Make complex clinical decisions in the absence of established guidelines.9. Provide a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors ensuring that all staffcomply with current legislation relating to all aspects of health and safety; adherence to all Trust policies and procedures; reporting any untoward incidents and undertake risk assessments where appropriate.10. Ensure that all the appropriate documentation for each patient is appropriatelycompleted according to departmental protocol and adhere to the data protection act. Correctly record all ultrasound images, where appropriate, on the Radiology PACS system.Managerial responsibilities:11. Participate in the clinical training of student Sonographers and others in ultrasoundtechniques.12. Assist with the selection process for student sonographers13. Keep stock control of consumable items (excluding drugs) and place orders as necessary in liaison with the Ultrasound Service Manager or budget holder14. Attend monthly ultrasound staff meetings and take appropriate actions resulting from these meetings
