Directorate: People ServicesHours: Full-TimeContract Type: Permanent, Start January 2026Location: The Council House/Working from home/Settings across Derby CityWe are seeking a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and/or an Educational Audiologist to join our team. This is an exciting role for a qualified ToD/Ed Aud or someone who is keen to undertake the post graduate qualification in Educational Audiology. We will also consider applicants with QTS, relevant experience, and who is willing to undertake the Post Graduate Qualification in Deaf Education.
The successful applicant will be working as part of the support service for Hearing Impaired children in the Specialist Teaching and Psychology Service (STePS). We are a small, motivated, friendly and professional team that support children and young people from 0-19. We have strong, well established and positive working relationships with the audiology department at the Royal Derby, the speech and language therapy service, our new communities/ bilingual team and our county colleagues. We work in a multi-disciplinary way and closely with other members of the team when they are also involved in providing support. Our children and young people, and their families, are at the core of the work we do and we work hard to ensure they get timely and high quality support.
You must be able to carry out in-person visits to schools and early years settings in Derby sometimes at short notice and you must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
If you are not a qualified teacher of the deaf you will be expected to study towards the Post Graduate Diploma primarily in your own time. We will encourage you to apply for a bursary to cover the fees but if unsuccessful the course fees will be met by the service.
Birmingham University Manchester University and Leeds University all offer the post graduate diploma. The course is a part-time distance learning course. For more information about training to become a teacher of the deaf please see the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf website (BATOD)
