Job title: Commercial New Business Underwriter – 2 positions (Senior and non senior position available)Salary: £40,000 – £70,000Location: Surrey – 3 days in the officePURPOSE OF ROLELawes is recruiting on behalf of a leading name in the commercial insurance market for an experienced Senior Underwriter to join their Surrey office. This is a key role focused on underwriting mid-market new business across a broad territory-Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and South London. You will contribute to a £30M GWP operation, delivering tailored solutions and driving regional growth through strong broker engagement.RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Underwrite mid-market risks, primarily Commercial Combined and Property & Casualty (P&C)
  • Develop and maintain strong, service-driven broker relationships
  • Price and assess risk in line with underwriting guidelines and current market conditions
  • Provide bespoke solutions across multiple lines, including Motor (Fleet/Trade), Marine, Liability, Professional Indemnity, Property Owners, Accident/Sickness/Travel
  • Request and evaluate additional information (e.g. inspections, financials) to support decisions
  • Promote disciplined underwriting practices and contribute to business growth
  • Represent the business during broker visits and external meetings
DAY-TO-DAY
  • Manage a portfolio of profitable mid-market business
  • Liaise with brokers to clarify submissions, underwriting queries, and present terms
  • Work closely with a 20-strong team in south London, promoting a collaborative environment
  • Spend three days per week in the office, with flexibility for broker meetings
  • Engage in continuous professional development through high-quality training resources
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 5 years’ underwriting experience within the commercial insurance sector
  • Strong record in managing broker relationships and delivering tailored coverage
  • Broad experience underwriting mid-market risks across multiple commercial lines
  • Knowledge of ISO rating and rules is advantageous
SKILLS
  • Strong risk analysis and technical underwriting capabilities
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills
  • Confident in planning, decision-making, and product development
  • In-depth understanding of regulatory and compliance frameworks
  • Commercially focused with a results-driven mindset
