We have children’s homes across the city which offer guidance and support to young people who are in the care of the Local Authority.Within each home is a team of 15 to 25 staff with you being the chef onsite. We are a growing service and are expanding from 7 to 10 homes over the next 2 years and we are looking for staff to support us with both our current homes and our upcoming projects.We prioritise support, learning, development and wellbeing across our workforce with strengths in practice regularly recognised. You’ll be based at Tatlow Road.What you’ll be doingAs a chef you’ll do more than just cook for the young people. You’ll be responsible for providing a range of nutritious and culturally diverse meals for both young people and the staff. You’ll use the council’s software systems to research new menus to keep the food exciting and creative. In addition, you’ll use programmes such as, Microsoft Office to display these new ideas and Outlook to communicate changes to the rest of the team.Alongside the home’s care staff and managers, you’ll help support the young people in the home with life-changing independence skills, teaching them to cook and plan menus that will lead to a healthy and self-sufficient lifestyle in their later years.Day-to-day activities will include but is not limited to, ordering provisions, overseeing stock control, record keeping, equipment maintenance and attending to the health safety requirements of the home.What you’ll needAs the successful candidate you’ll need to have previous catering experience with a keen interest in experimenting with diverse multi-cultural dishes. You’ll be creative and confident in your approach to providing a range of dishes as requested. Holding the ability to cater for different tastes, dietary requirements and cultures e.g. gluten free, vegetarian, Caribbean, Asian and traditional British cuisine.You’ll have basic knowledge of using IT programmes such as, Microsoft Word and Outlook as these will be needed for ordering provisions and ensuring stock rotation. In addition, you’ll be able to perform a range of domestic duties within the kitchen to a high standard of cleanliness and use, move and handle appropriate (including heavy) equipment.With regards to qualifications, a Catering qualification and basic food hygiene certificate is desired however if not attained you must be willing to attend training for these.You’ll possess a positive and approachable attitude, responding to requests and have the ability to use your own initiative and work alone. You should respect the views and wishes of the young people who live in the home, communicating and consulting with them in a sensitive and appropriate manner.Under the Equality Act 2010 and Children’s Homes, Regulations 2015, applicants must be aged 21.
