Join us on our journey.Purpose of RoleAs the Senior Design Engineer you will design engine components (dynamic parts, castings, exhaust, fuel, intake, cooling and lubrication) for high performance combustion engines.You will work in the Team of Engine Engineers and Technical Experts, responsible for designing parts to high quality standard and taking ownership of design and delivery of engine components on McLaren engine programmes. Interfacing with other engineering Teams, takes responsibility for integration of Engine designs with Powertrain Systems and Vehicle systems.Principal Accountabilities
  • Detailed knowledge of high performance Engine components and sub-systems.
  • Responsibility of components design, from concept to design development to delivery on time to McLaren engine programmes.
  • Liaise with suppliers and development partners, to deliver designs to defined technical specifications in line with the Powertrain & Vehicle programme timing.
  • BoM management and delivery of component and sub-system for the assigned designs in SAP.
  • Responsibility for creating & maintaining technical Specifications, DFMEAs and Design Validation Plans.
  • Takes ownership to meet cost, weight, timing and quality targets within DFM and DFA requirements.
  • Contributes to the technical assessment, integration and application of appropriate Powertrain technology.
  • Support vehicle programme attribute owners with respect to development and reporting.
  • Ensure the components interface seamlessly to the wider car.
  • Responsibility of design release in line with Engineering Release Timing Schedule requirements.
  • Guarantee delivery of Engine components and/or sub-system for designated engine projects in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process) and that Project Management KPIs are on track.
  • Cooperates with the Engine team in the execution and evaluation of results of component testing. Support powertrain & vehicle development activities including test specification, parts supply, troubleshooting and post test component evaluation.
  • Lead robust resolutions to engineering concerns.
  • Support vehicle manufacturing, launch & planning.
  • Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A good level of technical knowledge & industry experience of high performance engine component & system design, test & production is essential.
  • Advanced CATIA V5 2D/3D draughting/ solid and surface modelling skills is essential.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of GDT principals and application.
  • Competence in FEM calculation of mechanical components, both under static and dynamic loading condition is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Project management processes within SAP system is desirable.
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products is essential.
  • Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery is highly desirable.
  • Component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP is desirable.
  • Engineering degree 2:1 or above

  • Excellent feasibility assessment skills including design for manufacture and DFMEA input
  • A positive, proactive attitude with a high level of self motivation to deliver excellence.
  • Well organised and independent - able to work constructively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with design and development groups.
  • A willingness to travel within UK and abroad to visit partners and suppliers when required.
