Then we may have just the role for you.We are currently recruiting for an experienced Operations Manager to join and lead our friendly team at Tarmac Barrasford Quarry and Asphalt Plant, in Hexham, Northumberland. As well as Hexham this site is easily accessible from Newcastle upon Tyne, North Shields, Consett, Morpeth and the surrounding areas.Here at Tarmac, we are working hard to create a dynamic and inclusive environment and it's important that our people come from a variety of different backgrounds.Role ResponsibilityReporting to the Senior Operations Manager, the Operations Manager will manage and be accountable for all quarrying and asphalt plant operations on the site. Safety and operational standards are the fundamentals of the role with cost control, people management, delivery to customer needs and performance improvement being key. Managing plant compliance with business policies and procedures and ensuring that legislative compliance is also a strong aspect of the role.As Operations Manager you will also be responsible for:
  • Managing, coaching and developing a highly skilled, fit for purpose and extremely motivated team to ensure business continuity and reduce business risk
  • Understanding different methods of winning and extracting raw material
  • Knowledge of techniques employed to load extracted minerals and viable options to transport extracted minerals and its applications within the industry, including feeding, crushing, screening, washing, separation, classification and beneficiation techniques
  • Understanding Quarry Regulations 1999 enabling a Regulation 8.1(c) appointment
  • All aspects of budgetary control for all quarrying operations and producing operational reports
  • Maintaining and implementing existing and new, Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and training your staff on the same
  • Managing and overseeing the safe operation of the Quarry and Asphalt Plant and the planned preventative maintenance of all the site's equipment
  • Ensuring that the plant meets operational and production requirements whilst maintaining the equipment to a high standard.
  • Issuing of safety briefings and toolbox talks to your operational team. Reporting and investigating any unsafe or hazardous working practices
  • Managing proactively both mandatory training and developmental training of your staff and keep an up-to-date training matrix
  • Collating and report on monthly performance KPIs for your business unit for the Area Operations Manager and driving operational performance through KPIs
The Operations Manager position is primarily a Monday to Friday role however flexibility is key, with the expectation to work hours necessary to fulfil the required duties.The Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate for the role of Operations Manager will already possess experience and knowledge of quarrying operations or similar heavy industry environment and will be 8.1c appointed (will consider 8.1d). You will also have Diploma in Quarry Technology/FdSc Extractives Technology or similar qualification.Suitable candidates for the role of Operations Manager will possess:
  • Quarry Regulations 1999 - 8.1(c)
  • Working knowledge of production processes, H&S and Environmental policies
  • Strong IT skills including a high level of competence with SAP (preferred) and the Microsoft packages - Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to multitask and manage change
  • Full knowledge and experience of Risk Assessments and developing safe working procedures
  • Experience of managing teams and staff development
  • Proven ability to build successful relationships with internal / external stakeholders and customers
  • Project management experience
  • Effective Budgeting and cost control skills
  • SHE NVQ Level 4/QCF Level 6
  • IOSH/NEBOSH advantageous
