This is a great opportunity for someone considering a career in Medical Physics. We are looking for a physics graduate (or equivalent) to assist the Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists in our large, busy Radiation Protection Service (RRPPS). The post is for one year and would be ideal work experience to support an application to the Scientist or Practitioner Training Schemes.RRPPS is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and provides Medical Physics and Radiation Protection services to the Trust and to several customers in the Midlands and further afield. Customers are in NHS Trusts, private healthcare, education and industry. RRPPS staff includes Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists in Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Medicine, MRI and Non-ionising Radiation. We also have an Approved Dosimetry Service and an Instrument Calibration Service.The post will involve routine testing of imaging equipment; data collection, entry and analysis; and report writing. Additional duties will depend on the needs of the service and the experience of the post holder. The post is based in our purpose-built offices and laboratories in Kings Norton, but there will be some travel to external sites.The post is full-time (37.5 hours per week) but some flexibility will be considered.To discuss this post or arrange an informal visit, please contact Peter McGookin on 0121 371 7000 or Peter.McGookin@uhb.nhs.uk.Main duties of the jobThe main duties of the job are to:*Provide scientific, technical and administrative support to RRPPS colleagues and customers.*Collect and collate data required for Radiation Protection Committees.*Collect and collate data required for Patient Dose Audit purposes.*Process data and produce customer letters for Environmental Monitoring Audits.*Assist in the commissioning and routine testing of x-ray equipment under direction.*Become familiar with test equipment and computer programmes related to the quality assurance of diagnostic radiology.*Develop specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of Diagnostic Radiology Physics and Radiation Protection.*Become familiar with relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (e.g. IRR17, IRMER17, Medical and Dental Guidance Notes Data Protection Act, etc.) where appropriate.*Gain understanding (and assist where possible) of radiation protection, x-ray quality assurance, approved dosimetry services, instrument calibration service and non-ionising radiation (MRI, ultrasound and UV)*Gain an understanding of the maintenance and development of work protocols and software in x-ray quality assurance and other areas of RRPPS as appropriateAbout usUniversity Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust strives to have an inclusive culture where everyone feels like they belong, can thrive, knows that they add value and feels valued.   • *Knowledge and fluency with IT packages such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Access etc. for the analysis of complex scientific data.
Desirable
  • *Experience or education in Medical Physics and Radiation Protection.
  • *Experience in the use of non-standard software packages.
  • *Experience of quality assurance procedures in Medical Physics.
  • *Understanding of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection
  • *Experience in computer programming e.g. use of Python
