A well-established full-service law firm with offices in Newcastle city centre and Wallsend is expanding its Crime Team and is seeking a Solicitor specialising in Criminal Law to join the Wallsend office. This is an excellent opportunity for a solicitor with at least 3 years PQE, though candidates with less experience – including those currently in training, and have an interest in criminal law – are encouraged to apply.The Role Reporting to the Head of Department, the successful candidate will:
  • Provide comprehensive and accurate legal advice and guidance to clients
  • Manage their own caseload across a diverse range of clients
  • Maintain detailed, up-to-date case files in compliance with confidentiality and data protection regulations
  • Assist the team's Partner with a variety of matters
  • Take an active role in business development to raise the profile of the team and the firm
  • Achieve monthly financial targets, including billing and chargeable hours
You will be involved in a variety of criminal matters, including:
  • Representing clients throughout the criminal justice system, including police stations, Magistrates' and Crown Court
  • Advising clients, reviewing documentation, conducting research and planning investigations
  • Drafting legal documents and formulating effective defences
  • Visiting clients in police stations and prisons as required
Skills & Experience Required
  • Qualified solicitor, experienced fee earner, or trainee solicitor with criminal law interest
  • Police Station Accreditation highly desirable
  • Duty Solicitor qualification highly desirable
  • Higher advocacy in the Crown Court desirable but not essential
  • Ability to manage a caseload alongside non-casework responsibilities
  • Strong client handling and communication skills
  • Experience adhering to case management, billing, and compliance procedures
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality advice and achieving positive outcomes
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues
  • Engagement with business development activities
  • Good knowledge of IT systems and willingness to keep skills and knowledge up to date
