Highway Maintenance Engineer / Inspector Job descriptionEngineer / Highway Inspector - Make a Real Impact in Your CommunityAre you ready to take your engineering career to the next level while making a tangible difference in your local area?We're excited to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our dedicated team at the South Area Divisional Office in Beverley, part of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. You'll be working in one of the most scenic and vibrant regions in the country, helping to maintain and improve a highway network that spans over 3,500 km.As an Engineer / Highway Inspector, you'll play a key role in delivering high-quality highway maintenance and safety inspections. From identifying and planning minor works to overseeing their completion, your expertise will help keep our roads safe, efficient, and resilient.What You'll Be Doing:
  • Leading the preparation and delivery of minor highway projects and repairs.
  • Conducting statutory safety inspections across the network.
  • Collaborating with in-house teams and external contractors to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Advising residents, elected members, parish councils, and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting the Council's legal defence against claims through accurate inspection records.
  • Using your technical knowledge to assess defects, order remedial works, and manage budgets.
What We're Looking For:
  • A qualification in Civil Engineering (HND/HNC or equivalent) with solid post-qualification experience.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills.
  • A thorough understanding of highway maintenance, health and safety legislation, and engineering contract management.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills - you'll be representing the Council at public meetings and forums.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems to analyse and manage technical data.
