This internship is offered as part of an exciting programme of summer research opportunities for UK undergraduate students who meet widening participation criteria. Each internship will be supervised by an academic member of staff. These opportunities are designed to give students experience of contributing to university research. These internships would be ideal for students considering continuing onto postgraduate study.This internship is in partnership with the Lancashire Archives, Preston. The student will work on existing and newly accessioned materials relating to LGBT+ heritage in Lancashire. The intern will have the opportunity to pursue their own interests and develop a plan of work in consultation with the archives and their academic supervisor, Deborah Sutton.Pay Rate: £11.44 per hour plus £1.38 holiday payStart Date: 1st July 2024End Date: 26th July 2024Location: On campusWorking Pattern: Up to 36 Hours per weekJob DescriptionThe intern will collaborate with colleagues at the Lancashire Archives to contextualise materials relating to LGBT+ heritage. The intern will create a handlist of the content of the collection (i.e. a comprehensive listing that includes each item), and they will then be able to undertake a range of other activities according to their interests. This could include digitisation, undertaking interviews to contextualise the collection, cataloguing, repacking of materials to archival standards and creating an engagement output such as a blog posting, social media posting or similar. This will include an opportunity to collaborate with our partners, LGBT+ Lancashire. The student would be trained and supervised and will be able to get a good sense of the reality of work within the archival sector and other transferable skills relating to heritage engagement.Person SpecificationTo be eligible, you must be a UK fee-paying Part II UG student who meets one of the following widening participation criteria. Please confirm which criteria you meet in your cover letter.
  • I am from a low-income background (i.e., household income of £30,000 or less).
  • I am the first in my family to progress to higher education (neither of your parents attended university except as a mature student).
  • I am from a neighbourhood where higher education participation is low (defined as your home postcode being POLAR4 quintile 1 or quintile 2)
  • I am care-experienced.
  • I am a carer.
  • I am on the Lancaster Success Programme or the GROW Your Future Programme.
  • I am a mature student (aged 21 or over at the start of undergraduate studies).
  • I have a disability (including learning disabilities, physical or mental health conditions).
  • I identify as Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic.
Candidates who meet one of the WP criteria, will then be assessed according to the following criteria:
  • Currently a UK fee-paying part II undergraduate student at Lancaster University.
  • A short interview conducted in the Department of History. The panel will consist of the academic supervisor and a representative from the Lancashire Archives. Applicants will be asked to talk about their interest in LGBT+ history and heritage and in heritage and archives. No experience will be expected but some evidence of interest should be demonstrated.
