Solution Architects (SA) are responsible for delivering solution guidance and designs to projects and running operations. Key objectives are fit for purpose IT solutions, the right portfolio fit, technical integrity, right TCO (total cost of ownership) through its life cycle and a good fit with the IT technology direction of Shell. The resulting High-Level Designs have a measurable impact on the effectiveness end solution getting deployed in production and measured by stakeholder satisfaction.The solution designs need to have fit for purpose and fit for future solutions, technical integrity, the right Total Cost of Ownership through its life cycle. The Solution Architect is accountable for the high-quality architectural design and implementation - compliant with Architecture, IRM, and Supportability standards and strategies as well as IT General Controls. The Solution Architect ensures that existing reference architectures, technology services and other reusable elements are leveraged to the maximum degree and that the solution design conforms to the applicable business architecture.What you’ll be doingProvide solution architecture development, consultancy, and assurance to projects, making sure applications are well designed and conform to Shell standards and reference/segment architectures. The Solution Architect is accountable to the Project Manager, product manager(s) for the architecture of a solution being developed and implemented until the successful deployment of the solution. This includes:
  • Be the point of call for all architecture aspects of an IT product/project
  • Be accountable for the end-to-end architecture of the product being developed and implemented by being engaged in a sticky mode throughout the significant part of product lifecycle. In case of a projects be accountable till the successful deployment and hyper care of the solution
  • Identify architecturally relevant items i.e., enablers in product backlog and product line architecture vision. Work with business product owners and IT product managers to prioritize and commit enablers in the backlog. Decompose large enablers i.e., epics into features which can be fit into an agile iteration
  • Address and integrate the Business Process, Data, Application, Technical and Information Security aspects associated with enablers
  • Ensure solution architecture is documented using the relevant templates, tooling and confirms to Shell standards
  • Review and accept the low-level designs generated by engineering and SRE member of the product/project teams
  • Make decisions for architecturally significant design choices by thorough analysis of tradeoffs and incorporating stakeholder concerns
  • Identify and prioritize non-functional requirements which need to be overseen and provide design for implementing them
  • Identify architecture risks, issues and gaps with an IT solution and work towards resolving or mitigating them
  • Work with business analysts and product SMEs to ensure that processes and data models provided by market standard products are adopted in a configurable manner and not customized
  • Work with business analysts, data analysts, and business SMEs to determine the data scope by understanding the business data requirements driving the solution
  • Design conceptual and logical data models to support the business requirements
  • Ensure that physical data models created by engineering teams meet all functional requirements. Provide input on non-functional aspects such as sizing, performance, and scalability
  • Work with the business to determine and document the applicable data quality standards that the data used in the solution needs to adhere to
  • Ensure all applicable data policies (segregation of duties, business controls, data access controls, legislation, data privacy, etc.) are understood and adhered to. Proactively design to meet these requirements
  • Assess data sources and their suitability for the solution. This includes profiling data to infer and communicate pertinent facts about users, systems, and data quality from the data sets.
  • Design the end-to-end solution data flows sourcing data from architecturally approved sources (masters) and highlighting any gaps
  • Define fit for purpose integrations between systems. Identify key characteristics of the integration, integration domain, integration use case & choose appropriate Shell middleware while ensuring that the right non-functional requirements are clearly stated
  • Maintain and review API specifications especially for externally exposed APIs along with engineering teams as per standards defined by Shell and the product line
  • Work with application/engineering teams and other product architects to identify impact across the landscape in response to a requirement
  • Define the technology services and components to be used in the product aligning with Tech Radar defined at product line level. Conduct PoC’s, explorations and assessments to de risk technology choices and identify new items to be included in the Tech Radar
  • Define fit for purpose CI/CD pipelines to accelerate development and define optimal configuration of technology components especially those in the Shell’s Hyperscaler (Azure/AWS)
  • Guide SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) members in the product team on emergent design based on architecture principles, tradeoffs & patterns
  • Take an active role in documenting, improving & maintaining the reference models in architecture repositories like Bizz Design, Power Designer, lifting project deliverables to the conceptual and logical levels
  • Follow IT Technology developments in the market and leverage this knowledge in architecting solutions in Shell. Ensure solutions are ‘future-proof’
  • Maintain knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements, including data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), and ensure that those are included in architecture design decisions
  • Champion and embed Security by Design and Privacy by Design in projects, to ensure that the appropriate design decisions are made, documented, and implemented
What you bringDesirable Technologies & Programming Languages:
  • Expert in one or more of the programming languages (Node.js, .Net, .Net Core, Python etc) with Cloud Native Platform Development (Azure/AWS)
  • Expert in one or more of the front-end development technologies (specifically React and Micro frontend).
  • Expert in one or more of Data Development (SQL Databases, No SQL, Cloud Datastores etc) technologies
  • Business domain expert knowledge in Commercial Operations and Supply.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks
  • Exposure to ETRM, SAP HANA, Salesforce, API management, Multifactor authentication.
  • Azure Platform & Cloud Native:
  • Hands-on experience in architecting applications into the Azure platform, including migrations/re-platforming of legacy systems.
  • Engineering and architecture experience in designing and building containers, Microservices, Cloud Native applications, and federated Data platforms (Data Mesh).
  • Data Architecture, Data Management & Diverse Data Types:
  • Proven experience in Data Architecture including Logical data models and designing solutions using data platforms and medallion architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of data management: engineering, pipeline development, warehousing, storage, lifecycle management, privacy, security.
  • Experience with diverse data types: big data, high velocity streaming, IoT, low latency event triggers, longitudinal time series.
  • Proficient in SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Azure Services & Integration:
  • Significant experience with Azure Functions, Web Apps, distributed/event-driven architecture (event hub, event bus, Kafka), ELK.
  • Intermediate to advanced exposure to Azure Active Directory, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Azure Storage, Azure Kubernetes Service, CosmosDB, Azure SQL.
  • Integration experience with Confluent/Kafka, API Management, Logic Apps.
  • CI/CD & DevOps: Significant experience in CI/CD delivery using Git/GitHub, VSTS/Azure DevOps, Terraform
