
Perinatal Nursery Nurse (Mother and Baby Unit)

- To demonstrate a sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants under 1 year and utilise this knowledge to educate and guide other colleagues on the Mother & Baby Unit (MBU). This may include but is not limited to advice around breast/ formula feeding, weaning, sleep, play and development
- To ensure current practice and care in the Mother & Baby Unit reflects standards as outlined in the Trusts Safeguarding Policies alongside the Devon Safeguarding Children Board Procedures and to be able to engage with specialist safeguarding services as and when necessary.
- To take initiative and display ability to observe, assess, plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness and quality of care and interventions for infants on the Mother & Baby Unit.
- To support and empower the development of parent/infant bonding and attachment through engagement, age appropriate activities and play.
- To assist in the management and organisation of workload as required.
- Assist with clinical duties for all mothers within the Mother & Baby Unit.
- To use modelling and evidence based practice to enhance mother's and staff knowledge and skills in caring for infants on the Mother & Baby Unit.
- To contribute to the development of standards of care for both mothers and babies in the Mother & Baby Unit, proving feedback as necessary and taking positive steps toward implementing necessary change.
- Nursery Nurse Examination Board (NNEB) or Diploma at Level 4 NVQ in childcare & education or National diploma in early years or equivalent experience.
- Relevant attendance of courses in parenting or baby care and engagement suitable for the role.
- Detailed knowledge of infant development.
- Knowledge of age and stage appropriate play activities.
- Understanding of the Childrens Act and knowledge of child protection guidelines and procedures.
- Knowledge of primary health care and the pathway of monitoring the physical health of infants through Midwifery, Health visiting and GP input.
- Ability to implement previous learning in practice and demonstrate reflective practice.
- Excellent communication skills
- Awareness of NICE guidelines and other Government initiatives.
- Ability to manage difficult situations or provide advice to others to ensure they act appropriately.
- Recent experience of working actively with babies 0-12 months of age within the last few months and having contributed directly to the development of services available to them.
- Relevant post qualification experience.
- Experience of observing and monitoring changes in the physical and emotional condition of babies and contributing to the development of skills in parents and other staff.
- Ability to take initiative within your work environment and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Experience of working in a mental health setting.
- Experience of working directly with families.
- Knowledge/experience of maternal mental health.
