This internship is offered as part of an exciting programme of summer research opportunities for UK undergraduate students who meet widening participation criteria. Each internship will be supervised by an academic member of staff.These opportunities are designed to give students experience of contributing to university research. These internships would be ideal for students considering continuing onto postgraduate study.Pay Rate: £11.44 per hour plus £1.38 holiday payStart date: 1st of July 2024End date: 26th of July 2024Location: Remotely (in the UK) and on the Lancaster University campusHours per week: Up to 36 hours per weekJob DescriptionWe are looking for an undergraduate research intern to act as a co-researcher on our Student Transitions Project.The project has two aims. First, to redesign our 'Hidden Curriculum' leaflet that covers a range of information that students might find helpful in making the transition from school/ college to university. Second, we are also designing a welcome activity for our new first years starting in October 2024 that will help students to get to know their peers.Major Duties:The co-researcher internship will involve some, or all, of the following tasks:
  • Collaborating with the project team on project planning and strategy
  • Assisting with a literature review relating to good practice for supporting students making the transition to university.
  • Assisting with an audit of existing materials that already assist students' transition to university.
  • Assisting with information already obtained from student focus groups and helping with how this information can be used.
  • Assisting with the production of a new Hidden Curriculum document and a new welcome week activity.
  • Assisting with the dissemination of project findings e.g. through conference presentations and/or preparation of journal articles, blogs, good practice guides etc.
Person SpecificationTo be eligible, you must be a UK fee-paying Part II UG student who meets one of the following widening participation criteria. Please confirm which criteria you meet in your cover letter.
  • I am from a low-income background (i.e., household income of £30,000 or less).
  • I am the first in my family to progress to higher education (neither of your parents attended university except as a mature student).
  • I am from a neighbourhood where higher education participation is low (defined as your home postcode being POLAR4 quintile 1 or quintile 2)
  • I am care-experienced.
  • I am a carer.
  • I am on the Lancaster Success Programme or the GROW Your Future Programme.
  • I am a mature student (aged 21 or over at the start of undergraduate studies).
  • I have a disability (including learning disabilities, physical or mental health conditions).
  • I identify as Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic.
  • I am a UK fee paying student (all applicants must fulfil this particular criterion).
Candidates who meet one of the WP criteria, will then be assessed according to the following criteria:
  • Currently a UK Part II undergraduate law or criminology student at Lancaster University.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Able to demonstrate an interest in the project and a rationale for applying for the internship.
  • Experience in, or willingness to learn, drafting a literature review.
  • Experience in, or willingness to learn, how to work with digital platforms such as Xerte.
  • Experience in, or willingness to learn, analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Able to present information in an accurate and appropriate format, both orally and/or in writing.
