The Opportunity:We are seeking a Systems Administrator to play a pivotal role across the College of Science and Engineering. This college-wide position is focused on building, maintaining, and ensuring the continuity and resilience of various systems critical to our operations. The role includes managing an expansive on-premise Linux estate, which features Ceph storage, an OpenNebula virtual machine cluster, compute servers, web servers, and a Linux remote desktop service. The role demands proactive collaboration with colleagues throughout the College and coordination with the University's Information Services to support our diverse technological ecosystem.This post is fixed-term (for 18 months) and full-time (35 hours per week).We are open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.The salary for this post is at Grade UE07: £41,064 - £48,822 per annum.Your skills and attributes for success:
  • Experience of administering Linux / Unix based operating systems.
  • Experience of configuration management systems.
  • Programming skills in one or more scripting languages - e.g. Python, Perl and shell scripts.
  • Programming skills in compiled languages such as C or Fortran would be useful.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Calm and organised under pressure.
  • Experienced in change and incident management.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with staff and students with widely varied levels of technical expertise in computing.
