You're not just joining a team; you're becoming part of a collective force helping to build and operate a railway fit for the next 200 years!About the role (External)As Network Rail invests in new technology, the ability to carry out tasks remotely without having to go trackside is increasing.You will be part of a 24x7 team based in Doncaster, working three shifts per week for a total of 35 hours.The role involves monitoring various alarm systems looking for issues that could affect train running across Great Britain.No two days are the same with issues arising from failed equipment, the weather, vandalism, etc.You will diagnose and assess impact before working with various resolver teams to get passenger and freight trains running normally again as quickly as possible.Some of your activities will include:
  • Review of 'Service Reports' for service affecting failures to check the railway circuits at risk or failed
  • Complete GSMR coverage reports for Radio Base Station / Repeaters to provide to Route Control Managers to assist with train running
  • Monitor Legacy Transmission systems for alarms
  • Monitor voice network and remotely connect to Telephone Exchanges
  • Point of contact for technical escalations for field staff
  • And also to liase with Technical Support teams if required
  • Liasing with 3rd Partys (BT, Colt, Zetron, ATOS etc) to pass safety critical incident for resolution
  • Speak to field engineers who wish to book onto Telecoms sites to maintain site security
You will receive technical and professional training which will help you develop in this role and, for those wanting to, will also provide other opportunities to progress within Network Rail in the future.What essential skills and experiences are required?
  • Experience in one or both of transmission & GSM network management.
  • Working knowledge & understanding of SDH, PDH and DWDM networks
  • Practical experience of fault finding and fault resolution of transmission networks including synchronisation and protection.
  • Practical experience of managing planned maintenance & network interruptions.
  • Telecoms qualifications through degree or experience.
