Interested in English Literature? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking to appoint a part-time Lecturer in English literature 1520-1650 for Autumn 2024.Based in Birkbeck's School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, the Lecturer post will support the Leverhulme Trust Project Grant 'Written Worlds in Seventeenth-Century England'.As Lecturer in English Literature, you will;
  • Join a vibrant cluster of researchers in English, Theatre and Creative Writing (rated second nationally in REF 2020), in the innovative School of Creative Arts in an institution now under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor Sally Wheeler,
  • Contribute to organising teaching and research activities and be active in knowledge transfer and public engagement as well as other activities,
  • Have opportunities to contribute to the London Renaissance Seminar; the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Worlds and to Arts Week, Birkbeck's annual festival of the Arts and Humanities,
  • Contribute to BA modules in areas such as Medieval and Renaissance Literature; Literature, Empire, Race; European Drama,
  • Have opportunities to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team of researchers working on Written Worlds and benefit from connections with early modernists in Historical Studies.

  • Be an outstanding teacher of students from a range of backgrounds,
  • Have a strong research record in Renaissance or early modern literature and culture,
  • Be an able and organised administrator and have an outgoing relationship to the field and subject area,
  • May have additional teaching and/or research interests in later medieval literature and culture,
  • Have an understanding of Birkbeck, our principles of widening participation in higher education, and working with mature age, part time, and non-traditional learners from a diversity of backgrounds.
This Lecturer role is offered part-time, shared jointly with Professor Susan Wiseman's teaching.
