- Work with a range of metals including mild steel, galvanised steel and aluminium
- Setting up the machine, including selecting and installing cutting tools, securing the workpiece, and adjusting machine settings.
- Manual machinists use handwheels and controls to guide cutting tools, ensuring precise dimensions and surface finishes
- Operating the lathe or milling machine to perform various operations such as turning, facing, drilling, boring, and milling.
- Inspecting the finished parts to ensure they meet the required dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish using measuring instruments like calipers and micrometers.
- Performing routine maintenance on the machines, including cleaning, lubrication, and minor adjustments, according to job descriptions.
- Adhering to safety procedures and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow health and safety guidelines to maintain a safe working environment
- Perform basic maintenance on machines to keep them in good working order
- Understand and work to fabrication drawings advantageous
- Have on-the-job experience operating CNC machines, preferably with experience with metal.
- Understanding fundamental machining processes like turning, milling, drilling, and boring.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish symbols.
- Choosing the appropriate cutting tools and setting them up correctly for each operation.
- An attention to detail and excellent time keeping
- Ability to use hand tools for adjustments and repairs
- Proficiency in basic maths for measurements and calculations
- Can work alone or as part of a team
